Congress Must Intervene to Protect NATO and Greenland

In his addled and bellicose Davos World Economic Forum speech, President Trump threatened U.S. takeover of Greenland to satisfy his self-admitted psychological “need” to own and control the North Atlantic island, which comprises 97 percent of the territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. Predictably, his cascading threats blindsided our NATO allies, further undermining their trust in the United States.
Later that same afternoon, however, when challenged by these European leaders and with his eye on financial markets over his political weaponization of associated tariffs, the mercurial Trump reversed course. He claimed victory by announcing he had a “framework of a future Arctic deal” on Greenland with our NATO partners to protect the Arctic region.
Really?
To ensure the United States doesn’t back into a further confrontation with our NATO allies over his insatiable desire to acquire more real estate for the United States – or something worse – Congress needs to (1) reassert its constitutional powers as a separate but equal branch of government and (2) intervene to oversee any enhanced Arctic security agreement or amended treaty with Denmark on Greenland.
