WASHINGTON, D.C. — Our Republican Legacy (ORL), a group of conservative leaders committed to restoring fiscal discipline, is urging Congress to reject any budget that worsens America’s debt crisis.
"Americans do not want a budget that increases debt and ultimately weakens our country financially. The inaptly named One Big Beautiful Bill Act is historically unpopular because Americans understand when the wool is being pulled over their eyes,” said former Senator Jack Danforth (R-MO), ORL founder.
Former Montana Governor Marc Racicot, an ORL National Chair, added: “No American family would take on this kind of debt—Congress shouldn’t either. There’s no reason to rush a deal by the President’s July 4th deadline. We need a sustainable framework to avoid another credit downgrade.”
On May 16, Moody’s downgraded the U.S. long-term sovereign credit rating, citing unsustainable debt levels. The Center for Strategic and International Studies called rising debt a “strategic constraint” on U.S. power.
ORL’s Fiscal Responsibility principle reads:
“Historically, our party stood for fiscal responsibility. The explosion of national debt in recent years is a legacy of weakness that future Americans must inherit. We renew our historical commitment to a sound economy.”
ORL urges Congress and the Trump Administration to adopt a binding Fiscal Responsibility Framework that:
Reduces the debt-to-GDP ratio sustainably;
Combines significant spending reductions with responsible revenue measures;
Commits to pay-as-you-go budgeting without gimmicks, except in genuine emergencies.
